Artist Profile

“Sakura Miyazaki is a self-taught photographer, sculpture, designer, and writer from Nagasaki, Japan. Her works depict the affective relationship among family, nature, and imagination, specifically from the perspective of a queer Japanese American immigrant. Sakura’s work has been exhibited and collected throughout the United States, and featured in events such as RVA First Fridays.

Growing up with women who practiced mingei (Japanese folk crafts), Sakura was always surrounded by creativity. She would always draw and craft with scrap materials around her home. After a 17-year hiatus, she reunited with her love for art in 2020 and began creating mirror sculptures. Since then, her works have grown into mixed media series with a special focus in sculpture and photography.
