Comment
In recent years, Yonemura has been working on a new series called “MEISAI.” The series features figures buried in various colors, representing modern individuals who are overwhelmed by the abundance of information and values in the world. This series expresses the ambivalence of “anxiety about being buried in the surroundings” and “a sense of security gained by being buried in the surroundings.”
The MEISAI series also focuses on the “strong physical presence” of the artwork itself. By emphasizing the surface’s unevenness, the deliberately smooth textures, and the viscous quality of the paint, the series finds beauty in a different vector from what is depicted.
