YUGEN Gallery

YUGEN Gallery, founded in February 2022, is a gallery specializing in contemporary art. The term “YUGEN” in the gallery’s name derives from “yugen,” a Japanese aesthetic concept. We endeavor to convey the essence of beauty embodied in this term—such as “depth,” “sublimity,” “elegance,” and “grandiosity”—to people both in Japan and abroad through contemporary art.
Currently based in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo, and Tenjin, Fukuoka, the gallery bridges the distinct cultural spheres of the Tokyo metropolitan area and Kyushu, organizing exhibitions and initiatives tailored to the unique characteristics of each region.
The gallery primarily represents young and mid-career artists—both emerging and established—who pursue unique forms of expression both within Japan and worldwide. Beyond painting, photography, and installation art, the gallery introduces a diverse range of cultural genres that transcend existing frameworks, including contemporary calligraphy, contemporary crafts, and fashion. In addition to organizing exhibitions that address themes of high social relevance, we have in recent years actively worked to foster urban culture and stimulate economic revitalization through art, including participation in art fairs and regional collaboration projects.
Since our founding, we have steadily established a strong presence in the art scene through our originality and practical approach. Moving forward, we will continue to serve as a space that connects artworks with society, local communities with the world, and viewers with artists, conveying the potential of contemporary art more broadly and deeply.
