Special Exhibition: Bamboo Crafts – Traditional Beauty
The Oita Prefectural Museum of Art houses a collection of over 5,000 works, primarily by artists connected to the prefecture, which it showcases throughout the year in collection exhibitions and special exhibitions. Among these, the collection of bamboo crafts from within and outside the prefecture, comprising approximately 300 pieces and centered around about 80 works by Shōunsai Ikuno (1904-74), a native of Oita who was the first bamboo craftsman to be designated a Living National Treasure (Important Intangible Cultural Property Holder), is recognized as one of Japan’s largest collections in terms of both quality and quantity.
The museum positions bamboo crafts as a major regional cultural resource born from Oita’s unique cultural environment, hosting an annual series of special bamboo craft exhibitions within its collection shows.
This year’s Collection Exhibition I features works by Kibe Shoho, recognized last year as the prefecture’s second Living National Treasure, alongside outstanding pieces exhibited at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition and the Nitten, as well as works by emerging artists.
Additionally, visitors can view Japanese paintings from Kyoto, centered on Fukuda Heihachiro, and works by the late Edo-period ukiyo-e artist Migita Toshihide, marking the 100th anniversary of his passing.
