The World of Designs by Hashiguchi Goyo
Hashiguchi Goyo (1881-1921) was a pioneer of book design and graphic design in Japan. Born in Kagoshima, Goyo met Natsume Soseki through his brother while studying Western painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts). He gained sudden attention by designing the cover for Soseki’s debut novel, I Am a Cat. Goyo went on to design book covers for numerous authors, including Soseki, Izumi Kyoka, and Mori Ogai, beautifully enhancing Japan’s modern literature as a pioneer of book design.
Furthermore, he established his unique world—a blend of decoration and painting, tradition and innovation, Japanese and Western aesthetics—through works like “This Beauty,” which won first prize in a poster contest for the Mitsukoshi department store, and the new woodblock print “Woman Combing Her Hair,” later treasured by Apple founder Steve Jobs.
This exhibition focuses not only on his previously introduced work as a printmaker but also highlights Goyo’s role as a graphic designer. Through approximately 220 works and materials—including book designs such as I Am a Cat, sketches, drafts, proof sheets, paintings, and new woodblock prints—we present the elegant and rich “Design World of Hashiguchi Goyo.”
