Kota Kinutani was born in Tokyo in 1973.
The son of the world-renowned painter Koji Kinutani, he is a thoroughbred.
He spent his childhood in Rome and Venice, Italy.
He studied at Nihon University College of Art, Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Fine Arts, and the University of São Paulo Graduate School, and is a sculptor whose work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Japan and abroad.
His encounters with and guidance from world-renowned authors such as Yanagihara Yoshitatsu in high school, Tsuchiya Takeshi in university, and Misawa Kenji in graduate school likely shaped him into the person he is today.

He learns from geologists about the stones used in his works, and speaks with local producers and quarrying companies to learn about the stone’s history, characteristics, and role in the region. He then listens to the stone as he creates, in order to consider how he can best utilize it.

“Every day I work is my reason for living,” he says. He is a big fan of sumo wrestling, and during the Kyushu tournament, he visits the sumo stable early in the morning to watch the morning practice. When asked why his drawings, despite their smooth shapes, have jagged lines, he replies, “It’s to do everything that is invisible to the eye.”
