sponge
In August 2016, painter Chisato Tanaka and art planner Kazuki Saito founded “sponge,” a collective based in Fukuoka, Kyushu, with the theme of “art and placemaking.” Artists working in regional areas, including Fukuoka, face numerous challenges in sustaining their creative careers. These challenges include fewer exhibition opportunities compared to urban areas, a limited art community, restricted access to the art market, and a lack of local understanding and support. Despite these difficulties, artists continue to create by building their own environments and maintaining unique perspectives and identities.
At sponge, we organize exhibitions in commercial facilities and department stores, coordinate art for hotels, corporate offices, and private residences, and propose projects to companies with little prior involvement in contemporary art. Our goal is to create new spaces where regional artists of the same generation can thrive and foster a society that values and nurtures creativity through the power of artists.
