sponge

Sponge is an art coordination office established in 2016 and based in Fukuoka, Japan. It plans exhibitions, proposes and manages artworks, and connects artists with various spaces such as commercial facilities, hotels, and offices. Sponge also develops collaborative projects with artists and engages in community-based initiatives. With “creating spaces for art” as its core theme, the organization is committed to drawing out the full potential of artists. Its flexible, cross-disciplinary approach aims to bridge the gap between art and society by embracing unique ideas that go beyond conventional boundaries. Rather than working from a catalog, Sponge carefully tailors each proposal based on the context and concept of the space, working closely with artists to shape meaningful visual experiences.
For this presentation, Sponge will showcase a solo booth by Fukuoka-based painter Chisato Tanaka, who has exhibited widely both in Japan and abroad. The booth features a selection of her large-scale past works along with new pieces created for this occasion. Tanaka is known for her vibrant use of color and emotionally resonant scenes that blend everyday life with imagination. Her recent projects include a monumental wall painting at the Fukuoka Art Museum, completed in 2025, as well as various visual works for books, packages, and public events. Sponge is honored to present her evolving practice in this special context.
