1⃣ Kanzan Matsunaga and Cedar Door Paintings of the Former Yūsentei Villa
This exhibition primarily features seasonal flower-and-bird ceder door paintings by Kanzan Matsunaga, a Japanese-style painter from Fukuoka Prefecture.
This marks the first time in 26 years that this work has been publicly displayed at our museum. The previous exhibition was held in 1999, coinciding with the work’s formal acquisition into our collection, as Special Exhibition 149: “The former Yūsentei Villa ceder door paintings Exhibition – Matsunaga Kanzan’s Flower and Bird Paintings.” Because the paintings cover both sides of the sliding doors, displaying the entire work at once is difficult. At that time, only 30 of the 52 panels (30 panels) were exhibited. This exhibition, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the artist’s death, expands the display space to present all 30 panels, including 22 panels being shown for the first time.

3⃣Aquarium in the Soil
What comes to mind when you hear “aquarium”? Some might think of an aquarium facility, while others might picture a tank filled with tropical fish swimming about. What they likely have in common is the association with “living fish” and “water.”
This exhibition is an aquarium “in the soil.” That’s right. There are no “live fish” or “water” in the exhibits. Instead, we present materials related to fish found in the ‘earth’ – the very opposite of the water world, namely “archaeological sites” – displayed within cases designed to resemble aquariums. The materials on display—fishing tools, fish bones, ceramics depicting fish—all demonstrate how people in Fukuoka have interacted with fish in various ways. These are unique finds from Fukuoka, a region blessed with opportunities to encounter diverse “fish,” and they characterize the area. Please enjoy watching these fish, long dormant in the earth until their discovery in recent excavations, now swimming within the display cases.

4⃣ Asia’s Turbulent Times and People Connected to Fukuoka 2
The year 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Sun Yat-sen (1866–1925), known for the 1911 Xinhai Revolution. Sun Yat-sen threw himself into the revolutionary movement in his twenties and continued his activities until his death, leaving behind a will stating, “The revolution has not yet succeeded.” Among the Japanese who supported his activities were people connected to Fukuoka.
